Kailashahar (Unakoti), Tripura, January 22 (HBTV): A senior member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, Anjan Debroy, has been arrested on charges of raping his domestic help. The alleged incident reportedly took place in Kailashahar's PWD Road area, and sparked widespread outrage in the town.    

According to Kailashahar Women’s Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ripita Bhattacharya, the alleged victim was employed as a domestic worker at Anjan Debroy’s residence for a considerable period. The woman lodged a formal complaint accusing Debroy of sexual assault.   

The police have registered a case and arrested Debroy.   

Following Debroy’s arrest, BJP leaders from Kailashahar reportedly pressured the police to release him and withdraw the charges. However, OC Ripita Bhattacharya remained resolute and ensured the law was followed.   

Debroy was presented before the Kailashahar court on Tuesday afternoon, January 21.  The news of the arrest spread quickly on social media, sparking public outrage in Kailashahar, with many condemning the incident.   

Despite the public uproar, local BJP leaders have refrained from commenting on the matter. It is noteworthy that Anjan Debroy had recently contested for the position of booth president during the BJP's internal elections for Booth No. 45 in the Kailashahar Assembly constituency. However, he was not elected, according to party sources.
